What a day in Birthday’s, Gandhi and Sting bothsharing their Birthday with Don McLean. We could make a good list around any of them, but Don McLean gets the nod this year. American Pie has been rated as the 5th best song of the century by the RIAA and NEA, losing out to Over the Rainbow, White Christmas, This Land is your Land, and Respect. Not bad company. So today’s list will not be about the song itself as whole books have been written on the subject and no one agrees anyway, besides, I always preferred Vincent. No, today’s list will be on the top 10 parodies of the song.
- The Saga Begins – a Star Wars Version done by Weird Al
- The Day the Routers Died – Gary Feldman
- American Pie - The Brady Bunch – ok, this is a straight cover, but it cracks me up
- American Diet – “I’m too heavy for my Chevy, I belong in a sty….” perhaps that is enough.
- The Year Yale Law School Died – 1984 by the Yale Revue
- Bye Bye, French Canadian Guy - Retirement song for Mario Lemuix
- The Day that Football died - Retirement song for Brett Favre that apparently was released too early
- Parable Guy – ApologetiX – The Son takes a more prominent role in the song.
- American Pie Eulogy – Bob Rivers - mourns the song being ruined by Madonna
- Tom Constanton (Grateful Dead) performed a tribute versionof the song to reference the death of Jerry Garcia.
Obviously, some are funnier than the others but if imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, Mr. McLean is still getting some serious praise. Rightfully so. Happy Birthday Don!
