On this day in History, Thomas Edison first demonstrated his Kinescope in 1889, 2 years after it was patented. I wonder if he had any idea how big this invention would become, creating an entire industry and allowing a little town in Calilfornia to become one of the most widely known and the acknowledged center of entertainment. Hollywood. His motion picture machine made created the medium where stars were born, moguls were created, and even mundane lives, celebrated. So for today’s list, instead of creating yet another list of movies, we’ll create a lists of lists
The AFI’s list of Top 100
IMDB has a list of rated movies
So does Rotten Tomatoes
Leonard Maltin has his own list of greatest films
The National Film Registry picks only the best films
The New York Times keeps a large list
Films 101 has its own list
The Village Voice has an interesting list
Entertainment Weekly has a good list
and of course, Time Magazine has its own list.
Of course, while many of the great movies are on all the lists, there are still we’ll over 600 different movies on these lists… It might be easier, just to do your own list, after watching them all of course. And don’t forget to thank Mr. Edison! (and don’t worry, links will be coming shortly!)
